Opening of IKEA’s ‘Design Studio’ in Devonshire Shopping Center in February 2022

Windsor, Ont. –

IKEA returns to Windsor but in a different format.

The Swedish furniture company plans to open a “design studio” in Devonshire Mall in February 2022.

“The Design Studio is a new concept for the Canadian market,” says Lisa Huie, Public Relations Manager at IKEA Canada.

The studio is significantly smaller than the traditional IKEA store. It allows customers to design and order furniture by scheduling one-on-one planning sessions with IKEA designers or using a self-service planning station in a dedicated studio space.

“Shopping centers like Devonshire desperately need an anchor tenant like IKEA, even if it’s a small size IKEA, to attract customers,” says Ian Lee, a business professor at the University. Carlton.

Following the closure of Sears in 2018, Devonshire Mall struggled to find a replacement.

“If it gets enough customers, IKEA, who knows, might upgrade it to full size,” Lee says. “I see this as good news for the Windsor community.”

“What a great addition to the mall, what a great addition to the community,” says Renaldo Agostino, owner of Turbo Express Bar.

Agostino welcomes the possibility of increased foot traffic inside the mall after IKEA opens.

“I look forward to serving IKEA customers and staff with our great turbo products.”

Over the past few months, IKEA has opened several design studios in Ontario, including London, Brampton and Oshawa.
