There are two famous Emma’s in the cast.

Stone’s casting as Cruella was announced in December 2018, and Disney shared the first photo of her in full costume in August 2019. Since then, we’ve also seen behind-the-scenes footage from her filming in the UK.

Emma Thompson as Baroness von Hellman, a terrifying yet stylish fashion legend, joins the Oscar-winning actress. His influence transforms the principal lady into a vengeance-thirsty Cruella.

Cruel was led by me Tonyaby Craig Gillespie. The screenplay was written by Dana Fox (The wedding date) and Tony McNamara (The favourite), based on a story by Aline Brosh McKenna (The devil wears Prada), Kelly Marcel (Save Mr. Banks) and Steve Zissis (Unity).

This is the origin story of Cruella.

Rather than jumping straight into the Dalmatians saga, Cruel features a backstory, centered around a young woman named Estella, before she takes on her famous punny nickname. According to a Disney synopsis, Estella is a fashion-loving con artist, “a smart and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs.” After befriending thieves in London, Estella makes her way through the streets but quickly catches the attention of Baroness von Hellman, and their friendship takes a dark turn.

A new trailer shows Cruella’s journey through fashion.

The second official preview shows more of the character’s talent for design, as she works in a workshop and spends late nights slumped on a sewing machine. His talent is also what brings him to von Hellman, a formidable fashion legend with whom his initial bond turns sour. At the end of the trailer, we find out that Cruella is stealing the Baroness’s dogs, who are obviously Dalmatians.

The stone brushes it Joker comparisons.

When the Cruel trailer debuted, viewers online drew comparisons between the titular villain and the Joker, namely the 2019 movie about him starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Addressing the parallels, Stone said Total movie magazine, “It’s very different from Joker in many ways. She added, “I would never even compare myself remotely to Joaquin Phoenix.” I wish I was more like him. ”

Gillespie also intervened. “There are some really deep and emotional things that Cruella faces that send him to the dark and wicked side. So in that sense, it’s [similar]”he told the magazine.” But it’s definitely his own thing. Just to reframe Cruella, I thought it was important to show that darker side of her. But there will be a lot of fun, a lot of humor in it. There are a lot of jokes and absolutely delicious beats in the style, which is different from Joker. ”
