AT THE CUTTING EDGE: Winding Road Design Studio artist Alicia Marshall and MaaiDesign designer Maaike van Besien show off their new fabrics.
TWO Alpine Valley designers wear their hearts on their sleeves by design – so to speak.
Maaike van Besien, owner of bright online fabric store MaaiDesign, has teamed up with artist and designer Alicia Marshall, of Winding Road Design Studio, to develop a new line of wearable art.
Together, van Besien’s passion for quality fabrics and Marshall’s bold designs have resulted in a contemporary range of the Mountain collection, which launched this month.
The fabric has been specially developed for dressmaking, giving sewers the ability to wear trendy Aussie designs.
An interior designer for 20 years, Marshall made the tree change in the Alpine Valley over a decade ago.
Inspired by her new surroundings, she opened Winding Road Design Studio to showcase her own murals, lighting and furniture.
With a strong connection to natural and botanical subjects, Marshall’s images of eucalyptus, ginkgo and native flora have reached High Country and international clients.
Marshall’s new Winding Road Design Studio will open in Tawonga South in early April.
“It’s been a lifelong aspiration to join a like-minded person in the fabric business,” she said.
The prints feature the popular gum and ginkgo designs, complemented by a structural geometric pattern.
MaaiDesign online store focuses on slow fashion, offering quality fabrics and patterns for sewing enthusiasts.
Van Besien said she worked tirelessly to build a clientele with dreams of having her own fabric collection.
She said the development process took nearly a year, testing multiple fabric printers to ensure quality and colors.
“We are incredibly proud of this collection and believe the designs will speak to many modern makers,” van Besien said.
Mountain Collection fabrics are available at maaidesign.com.au.
